Meet the Finalists of the I Francisco Mário International Prize for Modern Guitar - Europe
One of the biggest Modern Acoustic Guitar Awards today, it aims to value the work of musicians and instrumentalists who dedicate themselves to one of the most played musical instrument in the world, the acoustic guitar, and celebrate the work of composer Francisco Mário, an exponent of Brazilian instrumental music and a pioneer in the production of independent records in Brazil. The best interpretations of Chico’s songs will compete for awards at the Ceremony on August 22, 2023, at the Munganga Theater (Amsterdam).

Final
The Official Ceremony will take place on August 22, 2023 (Francisco Mario’s birth date, when he would have been 75 years old), at the Munganga Theater (Schinkelhavenstraat 27hs, 1075 VP Amsterdam), in the Netherlands.
Each person selected for the final stage will be arranged in an order of presentation, on the day, by drawing lots beforehand. Those who cannot appear in person on the date will be disqualified and will be replaced by the subsequent candidate.
For the final stage, at the Official Ceremony, each musician must present live, on the guitar, a song composed by Francisco Mário, with a maximum of 6 minutes of presentation. No playback is allowed.
Airfare, internal transfer, lodging, and meals will not be provided by the Prize and are the responsibility of the candidate.
The presentation may be recorded and the candidates agree to cede the use of image and sound for use by the Cultural Institute Chico Mário and the production company Atelier Cultural for any purpose – promotional, commercial, or otherwise – for an indefinite period of time and by any means, at no cost and without legal or financial burden to the Institute.
The jury of the final round will be presided over by musician Marcos Souza and will have the participation of guitarists Nelson Latif and Jan Dumée (subject to change).
Candidates who do not meet the pre-selection requirements or who are absent from the Official Ceremony will be automatically disqualified from the Prize.

The prize, which has the support of the Guimarães Rosa Institute, the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Teatro Munganga, will be awarded by Instituto Cultural Chico Mário, the production company Atelier Cultural, and the Brazilian Embassy in The Hague, following its normal procedures.
If the winner of the I Premio Internacional Francisco Mario de Guitarra Popular is a minor, the deposit will be made into the account of his or her legal representative (father or mother, for example), as indicated on the candidate’s registration form, or paid in cash after the performance.

Dates and Stages

1. Registration
From April 10 to June 23, you can register here on the site and submit your interpretation to the Award’s pre-selection jury.

2. Pre-Selection
The jury will evaluate the completed works submitted and will confirm the finalists here on the site and communicated via e-mail by July 1, 2023.

3. Official Ceremony
The finalists will perform at the Official Ceremony at Teatro Munganga on August 22, 2023.

4. Award
Cash awards will be given to the 10 people selected, and trophies for 1st and 2nd place in the competition.
